Playtest Feedback and An Arcane Tome
over 4 years ago – Tue, Oct 01, 2019 at 05:57:32 PM

Playtest feedback is coming in and our team is working to review and incorporate it. Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and the material will be stronger for it! Thank you to everyone who participated in the second round of playtesting!

In the meantime, some of our other kobolds have been hard at work in putting together a tome of magic...

Deep Magic Is Here!

Nothing says magic like a massive tome of spells—and that’s exactly what we’re compiling.

A tome collecting, updating, tweaking, and expanding every awesome spell, cantrip, and glamour derived from years of the Deep Magic for 5th Edition series—more than 575 new and compiled spells by  the best in the business, including Wizards of the Coast staffers and  A-list freelancers. And we’re adding a lot more to that list: divine  domains, new arcane subclasses, expanded familiars and conjured  servants, and yes, even more new spells.

Design Diary: Underworld Lairs
over 4 years ago – Wed, Sep 25, 2019 at 11:04:46 PM

Our Underworld Lairs book will be filled with 14 mini-adventures all based in and around the Underworld. These “lairs” range in level from 3rd all the way up to 15th, to challenge even high-powered parties!

Our scout kobolds snuck into the writers’ caverns to get a peak at the design process for some of the lairs. They found Jeff Lee interrogating a rather intimidating ghost knight about its speed and aerodynamics, Kelly Pawlik behind a cloud of spores growing all manner of fungus that we’re sure the Kobold-in-Chief won’t mind in the warrens, and Mike Welham drawing chalk giants and dwarves on his wall in what we can only assume is a hypothesis of the evolution of dwarves from cave giants.

When confronted, our writing kobolds had the following to say:

Jeff Lee

One of the lairs I designed had a ghost knight as the main creature. The monster's abilities are best showcased in an area where the ghost knight can remain mobile. I decided upon a nontraditional location: a narrow pass. So rather than a room-to-room standard dungeon crawl, it becomes more of a gauntlet, with the goal being to make it through the location in spite of an enemy with obvious tactical advantage.

Kelly Pawlik

With the myconid village, I wanted to evoke this feeling of stepping out into an alien environment. Mushrooms of all sizes make me think Alice in Wonderland, but also fit with the Underworld, and to have these strange little creatures that look like the very things they are farming is unsettling. I wanted the characters to feel out of place and on edge. It is a potentially peaceful location, and these creatures could be completely disinterested in the characters' very existence, or they could have a few tricks up their sleeve.

Mike Welham

The villain for one of my lairs is an adult cave dragon, so I figured it needed a suitably imposing structure to fit its stature. The towering ziggurat crafted from the bones of creatures it has slain is the only major structure in the cavern, and my hope is that the players (and their characters) find it an awe-inspiring sight.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I received a completed map for another one of my lairs, which features cave giants. The map was more suitable for dwarf-sized inhabitants than cave giants. My reading of the cave giant entry in the Creature Codex gave me the impression their shamans were canny leaders, so a particularly insightful shaman would, obviously, come up with a solution. The characters might be a bit surprised when they encounter smaller versions of the giants packing just as much punch as standard-sized giants.

Look for these lairs and many more in the upcoming Underworld Lairs book!
